| I
am a Sudbury, Massachusetts portrait and landscape artist. I have
been painting for 25 years and have loved pastels since receiving
a gift box of them in 2001. I find inspiration in the simple moments
that reveal character and life in the people and the places I’m
drawn to. A portrait should reveal personality and presence, not
just an image. That is what I strive for.
My work is primarily
completed in pastel, a classic medium enjoying a resurgence in popularity.
Pure, archival pigment held together with minimal binders, pastel
is among the most permanent of all media. Its rich colors produce
effects like oil painting, yet the surface is dry and velvety, producing
a unique vibrancy of texture.
I earned a Ph.D.
in English Literature and taught college English for ten years before
turning my attention to art full time in 2003. I studied art at
Georgetown University and at the duCret School in New Jersey. I
also studied in Nice, France, and return often to visit family and
nurture a lifelong love of Mediterranean light and color. In 2005
I became a juried Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America.
My work has won awards and appeared in national juried exhibitions
in New York (Pastel Society of America, Allied Artists of America,
Catherine Lorillard Wolf Art Club) and in “Faces of the Fallen,”
a portrait exhibit at Arlington National Cemetery.
